In contrast to augmented reality, which extends the existing reality, virtual reality creates a new reality from scratch. Thus, there are no physical, social or human limitations to the design. The user is able to fully dive into a computer-generated world. The rendering of the 3D projection is currently done with VR-glasses using the entire field of vision, or through spherical rooms filled with big screens. The equipment is hardly affordable for customers. Currently, a problem with the technology is the so-called VR-illness (dizziness). This VR-illness is caused by the non-continuous frame rate, as well as the fact that the physical sensation people perceive is different to what the eye perceives. The technology has the potential to fundamentally change the way we consume media. People are able to simulate themselves into any situation and with increasing computing power the simulated reality won’t be distinguishable from the actual reality.
