Value creation processes in the production industry are divided into four levels. Sensors at level 1, automation at level 2, production control at level 3 and planning and engineering at level 4. Given this syntax, processes and supporting IT-systems are regarded, configured and installed independently. By integrating these levels (called vertical integration), the consistency from customers’ demands to assembly, both development to production and to service, are ensured. Vertical integration adds value by process transparency, control of the whole process chain, visibility of statuses in the production or service and thus better information towards the customer. A core advantage is the possibility to react on deviations and disturbances nearly real time.
